Knowing God's Love

From ReSource booklet no. 5

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2.9

You seek the Lord? Seek, but only within yourself. He is not far from anyone. The Lord is near to all who truly call upon Him. Find a place in your heart, and speak there with the Lord. It is the Lord’s reception room. Everyone who meets the Lord meets him there; He has fixed no other place for the meeting of souls.

Theophan the recluse

Be silent.
Be still.
Wait before your God.
Say nothing.
Ask nothing.
Be still.
Let your God look upon you.
That is all.
God knows.
God understands.
God loves you with an enormous love.
God only wants to look upon you with love.
Let your God love you.

Edwina Gately

Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and settle at the farthest limits of the sea; even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, ‘surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,’ even the darkness is not dark to you. For it was you who formed my inward parts, you who knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139

Be gentle, patient, humble and courteous to all, but especially be gentle and patient with yourself. I think that many of your troubles arise from an exaggerated anxiety, a secret impatience with your own faults; and this restlessness, when once it has got possession of your mind, is the cause of numberless trifling faults, which worry you... I would have you honest in checking and correcting yourself, but at the same time patient under the consciousness of your frailty.’

Pere Hyacinthe Besson

This is a paradox. When I am loved for who I am, I am free to become who I can be.

David Runcorn

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, ‘Jump,’ and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but don’t love, I’ve got nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.

1 Corinthians 13.1-7, The Message

Let your voice sound in my ears, good Jesus, so that my heart may learn how to love you, my mind how to love you, the inmost being of my soul how to love you.. Love is a wonderful delight of the spirit.. It is the heart’s palate which tastes that you are sweet, the heart’s eye which sees that you are good. The heart is the place capable of receiving you, great as you are. Someone who loves you grasps you… I pray you, Lord, let but a drop of your surpassing sweetness fall upon my soul.

Aelred of Rievaulx (12th century)

Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Ephesians 5.2

        And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
        I did.
        And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
        beloved on the earth.

        Raymond Carver

May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvellous love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never seen the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God himself.

Ephesians 3.17-19, Living Bible

To whom does the Spirit come? He comes to the ones who love him, who invite him, who eagerly await him.

St Bonaventure

ReSource has a simple policy: when we pray, things happen. This is not a lippy, meaningless policy - we've found out through trial and error! When God's children pray; people get healed, coincidences occur with statistical impossibility, lives are saved, governmental policies change; God moves in a thousand ways (not all of them mysterious!). If you'd like to hear some examples or share some of your own, just get in touch.
